I cried at this post. And partly because it reminded me of the absolutely gorgeous recent hit by Yaakov Shwekey and Abie Rotenberg, "Shma Yisroel", this very story you told. The chorus has become my mantra:

Shma... Shma Yisroel...
Know that there is, but one G-d above
When you feel pain, when you rejoice,
Know how he longs to hear your voice,
HaShem Elokeinu HaShem Echod!
